Blackjack Rules and Guide

Blackjack is the most popular card game in almost all casinos worldwide. The possibility that the player can interact and possibly actively influence the course of the game by holding or drawing new cards is probably the special attraction of this card game for many players.

Nevertheless, it remains a game of chance, of course, which is always associated with a risk of loss. In this article you will find the basics to have fun with Blackjack and with a little luck to play it without losses.

The Blackjack Rules

If you take a first look at the Blackjack rules, the game seems to be quite simple. At the beginning of the game, each player is dealt two cards face up and the dealer is dealt one card face up and one card face down. The player tries to reach the value of 21 with his cards or to get as close as possible to 21. He can hold any value lower than 22, for example 13 or 16, but has the option to hit new cards to his two cards received at the beginning of the game. If his cards exceed 21, he immediately loses the game and his bet will be removed from the table.

Once all the players involved in the game have made their move, the dealer must draw his cards. However, the dealer is obliged to hit a new card until the value of the cards reaches at least 17. If a value between 17 and 21 is reached, the bank may not draw another card and all players whose card value is higher than that of the bank have won the game. If the card value is equal to that of the dealer, the player gets his bet back. If the value of the dealer's cards exceeds 21, all bets that are still in play win.

An exception to the payout of the winnings at the end of the game round is given for the card combination from which the game takes its name, Blackjack. Blackjack is the combination of an ace (value = 11) and a second card with a value of 10 (10, J, Q K). If the player receives Blackjack with his first two cards and the banker's face-up card is not an Ace or a card with a value of 10, that player wins immediately and his turn is over.

Blackjack Payout Odds

Push: 0:1 (both dealer and player have the same card value, player gets his bet back)

Single payout: 1:1 (player's card value exceeds dealer's or dealer's is overbought)

Blackjack payout: 3:2 (dealer does not have Blackjack)

Player's Strategy in Blackjack

If you have read the Blackjack rules above, you may come to the conclusion that the most important thing for you as a player is to reach 21 or the closest possible number. But that's only partly true. It is at least as important for you as a player that you recognize the possibility that the dealer could overbuy and ideally make them do so. Since you, in contrast to the dealer, are not obliged to reach at least 17 with your cards, you can influence this to a certain extent if you pay attention to the face up card of the dealer and the probability of further cards. How to do this is explained in our upcoming Blackjack Strategy article.
